Cats can be ill tempered and mean on their worst days, but even the most annoying problems have a remedy somewhere. If your cat is clawing your furniture, your carpet, and your legs with the same ferocity, understanding the how and why behind the behavior can help you redirect your feline friend’s clawing instinct to be expressed in less destructive ways.
So why IS your cat clawing everything in sight?
Here’s the jawdropper: a cat’s claws never stop growing. Let me repeat that: They NEVER stop growing. When I found that out, a big light went off in my head. Just like a pet hamster that constantly needs to knaw on wood to keep their teeth from growing too long, what cats are actually doing when they sharpen their claws is removing the outermost layer of their claws. How many of your belongings has your dog destroyed? Chewing is a behavior problem that is so frustrating because it can mean big bucks when it is your carpet, sofa, or expensive leather shoes. This is one dog behavior problem that you’ve got to nip in the bud.
The first thing to consider is that dogs need to chew for their mental and dental health. In the wild, chewing is not a dog behavior problem, but a necessity. Make sure that your dog has plenty of safe chew toys to play with. This isn’t going to fix your dog’s chewing problem, but it is only fair to give your dog a healthy outlet for his need to chew.

This is story from Gina Hansen, how she got experience with her Dobermen.

I have a Dobermen whom is now 16 years old. In 2000 she developed a tumor. The veternarian performed surgery to remove the tumor. The biopsy came back it was cancer. That was my biggest fear the big C word and my beloved dog had it. She is just like my child. I asked the vet as to what we can do. He said hopefully we got it all.
Beware with warm weather because it can be especially dangerous to urban cats. When pet owners open their windows to let the air circulate, they’re also putting their animals at risk. Cats are curious. They’ll jump on that windowsill or wander out onto the fire escape. One slip and Fluffy is a goner. It’s common enough that the vets have coined it `high-rise syndrome, asically because cats do have such extraordinary balancing abilities that cat owners are lulled into complacency.
