Pet Allergies, What They Are and What to Do
Pet allergies are a common type of allergy found in homes in USA. If your dog makes you sneeze or your cat gives you watery eyes, you may be the “victim” of a pet allergy.
Sometimes the allergy is not even caused by your pet, but instead is caused by other people carrying the allergens to a certain place – like schools, or gyms.
Contrary to popular belief, the fur is not what makes you become allergic. The allergens are found in the proteins produced by the pet found in dander, saliva and blood. When the animal shakes it spreads the dander (invisible flakes of animal skin), and when the animal licks it bodies, like the cats do to clean themselves, they spread the allergens through their bodies
The most common types of animal allergies
The most common types of pet allergies, in order are:
1. Allergy to Cats
2. Allergy to Dogs
3. Allergy to Birds
These are based on latest statistics and considering that more than 70% of households in the USA own a pet, we start to see how this allergy is very common.
Can pet allergies be treated?
Rather than treated, they can be controlled using methods that prevent symptoms from becoming serious. Treatments include immunotherapy or allergy shots and medications. However these treatments must be suggested and supervised by a health professional.
There are some instances where the only option to get rid of a pet allergy is to find your pet another home, this can be a painful solution, but in cases where symptoms pose a threat t your health (like on asthmatic people) it can be the only way.
