Heartworm Problem

July 30, 2008 by pet-admin · Leave a Comment

Question :

If my dog’s blood test for heartworm is negative and heartgard has been given monthly for the last 2 yrs. why does he have to have another blood test before my Vet will give me a new prescription. Is Heartgard not 100% effective in protecting him from heartworm?

Answer :

I work in the UK where I have never diagnosed heart worm. I also do not have access to heartguard and have NO experience of that drug. Therefore, I recommend to trust your vet’s opinion rather than mine.

However I looked it up and I feel that, providing that you treat your dog monthly, it would be safe to carry on using it without blood tesing your dog.

Best wishes, Julien

How Omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids Can Help to Improve Our Pet Health

July 27, 2008 by pet-admin · Leave a Comment

Dogs and cats need both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for optimal health. The importance of essential fatty acids in canine and feline nutrition has been known for some time. Their use as a dietary supplement to improve the health and appearance of the skin and hair coat has been well documented. By contrast, their use in the management of skin disorders, particularly their anti-inflammatory and anti-itch effects, continues to be the subject of both ongoing research and lively debate.

Linoleic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and linolenic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) are essential for both cat and dog, as well as arachidonic acid (an omega 6 fatty acid) for the cat. Linoleic acid is particularly important because it alone provides the necessary conditions to facilitate moisturization of the skin.

Are You Worried About Your Dog’s Arthritis and Joint Pain?

July 25, 2008 by pet-admin · Leave a Comment

Did you know that 25% of all dogs develop arthritis or joint problems in the course of their lifetime? Actually, I didn’t know that until I looked it up. After realizing every dog I ever owned developed these problems, I decided to read up on it. We always gave our dogs the occasional doggy aspirin and the recommended Rymidal from the vets office, but I didn’t know that there was other products out there that could have help them.

Unfortunately our oldest dog a Lab/mix is now experiencing difficulty in jumping up on the couch and even standing up from lying on the kitchen floor. He was extremely overweight at one point, but we finally managed to control that with no table scraps, but it still remains hard to keep his weight down. I used to be able to walk him almost everyday, but the walks have become less and less frequent now that his arthritis has gotten worse.
