pet’s age: 5+
pet’s sex: female
previous treatment:

spayed and up to date with all shots etc

QUESTION:

She often gets gaggy, like hiccups. Sometmes she spits up, mostly just
miserable. I usually take her on my lap and rub her tummy and head to relax her
with soothing soft talk. Seems to occur for no reason and lasts longer each

time. She’s not a nervous dog at all. Esophogeal? What to do? Thanks for
your time–

ANSWER:

Hi,

Oesophageal disorders are not very frequent. On the contrary, pharyngeal/tracheal infections are very common (such as kennel cough) and tracheal issues (such as tracheal collapse) is common in small breed dogs.

If your dog is retching, I would be suspicious that he suffers from a pharyngeal/tracheal problem. Because he feels miserable, it would be interesting to measure his temperature to make sure that he is not feverish.

Anyway, I would recommend that you visit your local vet so that Scott gets a full clinical examination. It might be that your doggy has a simple tracheal infection and just needs some antibiotics.

Best regards.

Julie
