QUESTION:

One of my dog’s paws (in between his pads) is very red and upon closer
examination, there are black spots. They are not insects. Is it a fungal
infection? He licks this paw often.

ANSWER

Dear,

Usually fungal infection doesn’t appear only on the paws, but also on other parts of the skin. It is some kind of irritation. It might be contact dermatitis from the grass where it walks, food allergy or eczema of some bacterial infection. It can also be foreign body from grass if there is swelling.
Clean the paws with shampoo, dry them well and apply some antibiotic ointment (better with combination with corticosteroids) 3 times per day. After 5 days administer ZnO – vitamin ointment 2 times per day for another 5 days.
Your vet must find the cause of the problem.
