Question :
Hi, I m the same person who asked you about kidney failure in my lhasa apso dog on 1st of July. I got our answer and i think u might be right. My dog has been going IV fluids for the past two weeks but yesterday she secreted some greenish fluid from her vagina. The vet will take her tests tomorrow but can it be pyometra. If yes how can it be treated without surgery. Plaese suggest. i love my dog a lot and i don’t want to lose her. The vet says she can’t undergo operation. Please help! Please.
Answer :
Hi,
Greenish fluid is pus. Therefore, if pus comes out of your dog’s vagina, she is very likely to suffer from pyometra.
In my experience, medical treatment of pyometra is difficult (does not always work) and very costly (2-3 times more than surgical treatment). Should you or your vet decide against surgical treatment, then you may use some antibiotics to treat the infection and some hormonal treatment to open the cervix of the uterus and stimulate the uterus muscular walls: this does help towards the elimination of the pus.
I recommend the surgical option no matter what. While the anaesthetic risk is real, it is usually lower than the high risk of medical treatment failure.
The general anaesthetic risk may be decreased with:
- pre and per and post-operative fluid therapy
- pre and per and post-operative antibiotic therapy
- gaseous anaesthesia
- good surgical technique
I wish you and your doggy the best of luck, Julien
